The Sea Change is based on the 1959 novel of the same name written by British writer Elizabeth Jane Howard

After an over thirty-year career in the world of cinema as an interpreter, Kristin Scott Thomas is ready to move into the director's booth. The British actress, as Deadline exclusively reports, will make her directorial debut with the drama The Sea Change from a non-original screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

Based on the 1959 novel of the same name written by Elizabeth Jane Howard, known in Italy under the title Change of Route, the film will star Scarlett Johannson. Unfortunately, the role the American actress is going to fill has not been revealed, but many believe she was cast by Thomas to play Lillian.

The Sea Change centers on Emmanuel and Lillian Joyce, a middle-aged couple belonging to the Jewish and cosmopolitan upper-middle class of London. He is a successful playwright, and she, younger than her husband, is a fragile, refined, and worldly woman. To mediate between the two, the handyman manager Jimmy Sullivan.

The Joyces lead a life of wanderers: London and New York for Emmanuel's work, but also frequent holidays in various places in the Mediterranean. Emmanuel betrays Lillian with great ease, with the young actresses and secretaries suffering from her charisma; also thanks to Jimmy's skilled work, Lillian accepts her husband's infidelities with resignation and leads a hushed life.

When a new secretary is needed, Alberta enters the scene, a very young and naive girl who comes from a large country family and suddenly finds herself catapulted into a world completely unknown to her. As the two men begin to suffer the simple charm of the girl and Lillian begins to fear that Alberta will become her husband's next lover, the restless quartet moves to a Greek island, where the dynamics between the four characters will take an unexpected turn.
