Peter Jackson reveals that he was snubbed by the production of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series after being asked to collaborate. Peter Jackson is the Oscar-winning director who revolutionized genre cinema with his The Lord of the Rings trilogy, before turning back to the fantasy world created by JRR Tolkien with The Hobbit trilogy. 

So when Amazon announced the making of a series based on the world of The Lord of the Rings - a record-breaking production inspired by the Appendices to the work of the master of fantasy and expansion of Tolkien's mythology - many fans found it hard to imagine a depiction. Middle-earth film without Jackson's contribution. Apparently, the director was given the opportunity to collaborate, but then he was cut off from the project.

The director revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he had been asked to participate in the show and that he had given his availability, but when he asked Amazon to send him the scripts, the production of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power he never answered him. “They asked me if I wanted to get involved. I replied 'This is an impossible question to answer without seeing a script first'. So they said: 'As soon as we have the first two scripts, we will send them to you. And the scripts never came. But it's fine. No complaints ".

In a statement also issued to THR, Amazon responded to Peter Jackson's comments citing an "obligation" to differentiate themselves from the director's films. According to THR, this decision is due to the fact that Warner Bros. Discovery still owns the rights to the films, and therefore the Amazon series had to differentiate itself from that intellectual property at all costs. 

“In pursuing the rights to our show, we were obliged to keep the series distinct and separate from the films,” a company spokesperson said. "We have the utmost respect for the Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to watching The Rings of Power." Despite the misunderstanding, Peter Jackson wishes the series the best and plans to watch it alongside audiences when it arrives on Prime Video (September 2, 2022).
