Lucasfilm announced – during the Star Wars Celebration taking place in London this weekend – that actor Lars Mikkelsen will reprise his role of Admiral Thrawn for the anticipated live-action series Ahsoka, the new adventure on the small screen of Anakin Skywalker's beloved padawan, played by Rosario Dawson. According to reports from those present, Mikkelsen joined the cast of the show - arriving in August on Disney+ - on stage at the event. The actor previously voiced Thrawn in the third and fourth seasons of the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Thrawn already makes an appearance in the first teaser trailer of the series, albeit from behind.

Created by legendary science fiction author Timothy Zahn, Grand Admiral Thrawn was one of the most compelling villains of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe. The only alien to ascend to such a high rank in the Empire, he was useful to Palpatine due to his strategic genius and tactical skills, not for nothing Zahn modeled the character on Sherlock Holmes, giving him the ability to intuit the strategies of his opponents. Though these stories were made non-canon (or "legends"), after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, Thrawn made his screen debut in Star Wars Rebels and several of Zahn's canon novels. The Mandalorian season 2 set up Thrawn as the next big bad in the all-star franchise created by George Lucas.

The Disney+ series created by Dave Filoni sees the return of Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka, an exiled Jedi who was once the apprentice of Anakin, before the latter succumbed to the dark side of the Force, becoming Dark Vader.
