Aquaman 2 will now hit theaters nearly a week early on December 20, moving from Christmas Day to a midweek premiere.

Director Blitz Bazawule's musical remake of The Color Purple, previously scheduled for a Dec. 20 release, will now be released in place of the Jason Momoa-starring film, Dec. 25. Obviously these dates are intended for US cinemas, in Italy still don't have an official release date (presumably it will be the same, if not anticipated as often happens for blockbusters). Warner Bros. had planned to release Aquaman 2 on December 16, 2022, before pushing it back to March 17, 2023. This latest date was eventually given to another DC-branded sequel, namely Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Aquaman was then pushed back to December 2023, thus guaranteeing its release 5 years after that of the first film, which was a real success at the box office (it was the first film in the DC Extended Universe to exceed one billion dollars) and which conquered the heart of critics and audiences. The sequel reunites Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry with Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Arthur's Atlantean half-brother and former king of Atlantis; Amber Heard as Princess Xebel Mera; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the vengeful Black Manta; Dolph Lundgren as Mera's father, King Nereus; and Temuera Morrison and Nicole Kidman as Arthur's parents. James Wan directs the sequel from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, based on a story by Wan, Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, and Momoa himself.

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, an ancient power forces Arthur and Orm to form an alliance to protect Atlantis - and the world - from devastation. Among the new cast members are Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Jani Zhao as Stingray, Indya Moore as Karshon, Vincent Regan as the former king of Atlantis, and Pilou Asbaek in an as yet unknown role.
