A new teaser trailer for the live-action Barbie movie has been released and fans think it could be masking a "major twist."
Directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women), the film is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most anticipated for this year, also thanks to its incredible all-star cast, led by Margot Robbie as the iconic Mattel doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The cast includes stars like Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Dua Lipa, and Kate McKinnon. The first teaser trailer released last year did not reveal much about the plot of the awaited film. The video has been edited to look like a parody/quote of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, without revealing anything about Barbie's storyline. This second taste didn't reveal much either, although it's no longer a parody.
Viewers praised the new trailer and many of them noted that the film's plot is still being kept under wraps. The only official synopsis released quotes: “Living in Barbie Land means being perfect in a perfect place. Unless you're having an existential crisis. Or you're a Ken." They predict that the film harbors a huge twist. Some suggest that the fact that the film was presented in Kubrick style is a hint that nothing is as it seems and that Barbie will have plenty of surprises in store.
“The fact that they have shown very little plot gives me a hint that there is going to be a very big twist that will rock our world,” one person wrote on Twitter. “I love how they haven't revealed anything about the plot, I'm assuming they end up in the real world, somewhere in Los Angeles,” someone else speculated. “The casting for this film looks perfect and I can't wait to see it in theaters.”
Backing up this notion is the fact that promotional posters for the film, also released on Tuesday, revealed that America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Helen Mirren, Ferrell, Connor Swindells, and Jamie Demetriou will play "humans." Meanwhile, other fans praised the trailer and production design. “I never thought the day would come when a Barbie movie trailer would be a cinematic masterpiece,” wrote one person. “I love it, this movie is going to be a hit,” someone else said.
Barbie will arrive in cinemas on July 20, 2023, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
