Dave Filoni and James Mangold will direct two new Star Wars films, Lucasfilm revealed at the Star Wars Celebration this weekend in London. The directors will direct two separate films to continue the story of the stellar franchise on the big screen. It has also been revealed that a third new film is being planned, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley's Rey and which will be directed by Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Mangold's film will return to the early days of the Jedi, while Filoni's project will focus on the New Republic and will "close" the interconnected stories that are told in the Disney+ series, including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka (whose the first trailer was shown) and others. James Mangold recently directed the highly-anticipated new Indiana Jones film, due out this summer, while Dave Filoni is best known for serving as showrunner on The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, both Disney+ Star Wars franchises.
The Obaid-Chinoy film will instead be set after the events of 2019's Rise of Skywalker and will see Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order. Peaky Blinders and Spencer screenwriter Steven Knight will write the screenplay. The as-yet-untitled project marks several milestones for George Lucas' franchise: Obaid-Chinoy is the first woman and first person of color to direct a Star Wars film. The Pakistani-born filmmaker has won two Oscars: in 2011 for Saving Face and in 2015 for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, while she recently directed two episodes of the Ms. Marvel series for Disney +.
