Super Mario Bros. was one of the most anticipated movies of the year and was expected to be a huge success. And so it was. The adventure starring the Nintendo plumber broke several box office records during its first five days in theaters! The animated film, a collaboration between Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal, broke numerous records, thanks to word of mouth, nostalgia for the popular video game series, and huge audiences in theaters.

Super Mario: the impressive box office data

For starters, Super Mario Bros. had the best premiere of the year, with worldwide sales of $377.2 million, beating out Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which debuted at $225 million. 3 million. More than 150 million difference! That $377.2 million also marks the best international premiere for an animated film of all time, beating out the $358 million achieved by Frozen 2. It's also the best premiere in history for a film based on a video game, ridiculing 210 million Warcraft.

In addition, the adaptation of the famous Nintendo video game also broke the record for the best five-day premiere in the United States, i.e. for its release on a Wednesday instead of a Friday (as is often the case). Until now, that honor belonged to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with $200 million, but Super Mario Bros. hit $204.6 million.

And in Italy?

Even at the Italian box office, the animated film with a stellar cast is in first place with impressive total takings of 6,972,434 euros (1,233,144 euros only at Easter). Arrived in Italian theaters on April 5, the film was attended by 954,528 people. With only 5 days of programming, the film is currently in fifth place in the ranking of the best seasonal receipts. Will Super Mario be able to reach the top, undermining films like Minions 2 or Black Panther 2? In the first place, we find the sequel to Avatar with 44,658,177 euros, a (perhaps) unattainable figure!
