Super Mario Bros – The Film literally dominated the US Box Office in its debut weekend, which also coincided with Easter.

An important debut was expected for the most famous of video game heroes, but not at these levels. According to data provided by BoxOfficePro, in fact, the Universal Pictures film collected 146.36 million dollars over the weekend, a figure that rises to 204.62 million in its first five days in theaters (it debuted in the US last Wednesday). Pre-release estimates pushed the film towards a range between 110 million and 125 million. Statistics in hand, the collection in the three days of Super Mario Bros – The Movie has risen to the top of the special ranking that includes films based on video games, effectively exceeding the 72.1 million collected by Sonic 2 in 2022.
Taking instead into consideration the grossing in five days, the film has already surpassed all videogames totals at theaters, including Sonic 2 with 190.8 million. Internationally Super Mario Bros grossed 172.8 million for a worldwide total of 377.5 million, directly at the top of the animated openings of all time, this special ranking was dominated to date by Frozen II with 228.2 million. Among the top earners abroad, Mexico leads with 24.7 million, followed by the UK and Germany with 19.6 million and 14 million respectively.
John Wick 4 grossed another 14.6 million dollars in second place, for a total of 147.06 million, and ever closer to the total raised by the third chapter (John Wick 3: Parabellum), stopped at 171 million. Third place on the US Box Office podium went to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with $14.5 million, for a total of $62.27 million. In fourth place is space for the second debutant of the weekend, namely Air – The Story of the great leap with 14.46 million dollars (total in five days 20.21 million). While Scream VI finished the weekend in fifth place with $3.31 million, and a total of 103.84 million, a result that as of tonight counts as the highest grossing of the franchise, surpassing the total receipts of Scream (103 million) and Scream 2 (101.3 million).
