Chennai Rains: Heavy rain warning in four states, schools and colleges closed in Tamil Nadu, helpline number released

IMD has predicted rain and thundershowers in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Puducherry till December 4. Due to heavy rains, schools and colleges are closed in many places including Chennai.

IMD Heavy Rain Alert- India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rain with storm and lightning in many districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai. Due to this, schools and colleges have been kept closed in four districts of the state. Due to heavy rain, the water has reached knee level. Continuous rain has also caused heavy traffic jams. 

The Meteorological Department says that a low-pressure area is forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the southern Andaman Sea, due to which there is a possibility of a cyclonic storm here in the coming days. Stalin's government has issued helpline numbers to help people. The IMD has also predicted rain and thundershowers over other southern states and union territories like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Puducherry in the next five days till December 4.

In its morning weather forecast, the IMD said Chennai and many other districts of Tamil Nadu will receive intense rain with thunderstorms and lightning today. A holiday has been declared for the day in both schools in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram districts and schools and colleges in Tiruvallur.

Earlier on Wednesday too, there was heavy rain in Chennai and many districts of Tamil Nadu. In the video that surfaced on social media, it can be seen that many roads in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur are filled with almost knee-deep water. Due to continuous rain, there was a heavy traffic jam in Chennai.


Helpline number released

Chennai Corporation has launched helpline numbers in the city for those who need assistance due to the rains. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the Tamil Nadu capital and its neighboring districts on December 2 and December 3, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall.


NDRF took charge

The Meteorological Department says that a low-pressure area is forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the southern Andaman Sea, due to which there is a possibility of a cyclonic storm here in the coming days. After this, there is a possibility of it turning into a cyclonic storm on December 2. Five NDRF teams have been deployed in Chennai, Chengalpet, and Villupuram districts in view of the cyclone warning.


CM Stalin issued instructions

Amid heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed officials, ministers, MLAs, and local body representatives to provide all necessary assistance to people in rain-affected areas. IMD has also predicted thunderstorms over other southern states and union territories like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Puducherry in the next five days till December 4.
